Equip Your Agent with a "Toolbox"

Integrate multiple external tools — such as a search engine, calculator, and weather lookup — into a LangChain Agent, enabling it to automatically select and invoke the right tool based on user questions. Through this challenge, you'll master how to define, register, and use LangChain tools, ultimately building an intelligent Agent with true "action capabilities".

Objectives

Successfully integrate at least 3 tools (search engine, calculator, weather lookup) and register them all within the same Agent
Use the @tool decorator to define at least 1 custom tool, and write an accurate, clear description for it
Run the Agent and ask a compound question that requires invoking multiple tools simultaneously, then observe the tool call chain in the verbose output
Add error-handling logic to your custom tool to ensure it returns a meaningful error message instead of crashing when given invalid input

Hints

🔍 A tool's description is the core basis for the Agent's decision-making — if the Agent keeps picking the wrong tool or ignores tools altogether, check whether your description is specific enough and clearly explains "when this tool should be used"
🧮 When implementing the calculator tool, you can use Python's built-in eval() for a quick start, but make sure to wrap it in a try/except block to prevent malformed or malicious expressions from crashing the program
🌤️ For the weather lookup tool, start by returning a fixed-format string with mock data, then swap in a real weather API (such as OpenWeatherMap) once the logic is working — this lets you quickly validate the Agent's call flow
👀 After setting AgentExecutor(verbose=True), read the console output carefully — you'll see the Agent's "inner monologue": the complete reasoning chain of Thought → Action → Observation, which is the best way to understand how an Agent actually works
